An ensemble telling a many-sided story
The Broadway cast includes Scott Barrow, Michelle Beck, Michael Cerveris, Kathleen Chalfant, Delia Cunningham, Brandon Flynn, Montego Glover, and Conrad Ricamora. The company portrays historical figures, museum researchers, descendants, and other people connected to the album and its investigation.
Several performers take on multiple roles. That structure supports the play’s movement among the original photographs, the later research process, and the present-day questions surrounding the people shown. Use the current official cast listing for role details and any company updates.
Writers and creative team
Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich wrote the play; Kaufman conceived and directs it. The creative team includes scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer David Lander, sound designer Bobby McElver, projection designer David Bengali, and dramaturg Amy Marie Seidel.
Projection and sound are especially relevant to a play built around a photographic archive. The designers help the audience encounter evidence as part of a live theatrical event, while the writing shapes how the investigation unfolds.
A production grounded in research
The play is based on real events and the Museum’s investigation of the Höcker Album. The stage version turns archival research into a narrative; the museum’s records remain the reference point for historical claims.
