How The Fantasticks Became a Musical Classic

From a small Off-Broadway stage

Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt first developed The Fantasticks as a one-act work at Barnard College in 1959. After revision, it opened at the Sullivan Street Playhouse on May 3, 1960. The original New York production ran for 42 years and more than 17,000 performances before closing in 2002.

That unusually long run helped make the musical a familiar title to generations of theatre audiences. Its intimate scale, small cast, and compact fable have also made it adaptable for companies far beyond Broadway.

The Broadway debut

The 2026 production marks The Fantasticks’ first Broadway engagement. It plays at the Hayes Theater, a venue operated by Second Stage, with a revised book and lyrics by Jones and direction and choreography by Christopher Gattelli.

A Broadway premiere is different from a revival of an earlier Broadway production: the musical became a classic through its Off-Broadway history, and this is its first Broadway run. The new staging gives audiences a chance to encounter that history in a different venue and production context.

What remains at the heart of the show

The premise remains direct: two mothers arrange a romance for their children by pretending to feud. The story then asks what happens when a planned romance meets experience, disappointment, and a more mature understanding of love.
